What is hosting?

We've surely all rented something at one point in our lives - a suit, a car, a house. Space on the Internet is no different, and renting cyberspace is known as hosting. There are two kinds of hosting: web hosting and server hosting.

With web hosting, the Internet Service Provider (ISP) provides you with secure space on a shared server that you can use to upload your website or important files to the Internet. Server hosting can be either Dedicated or Virtual. Dedicated server hosting entails your ISP to allocate a physical space block for use to host your own server in its secure data centre, while Virtual server hosting allows you to share one large server but make it look as though you have your own server.

Because the security of your information is as important to us as it is to you, know that iONLINE hosts its servers in a secure data centre with a 24-hour guard, access control, and seven days’ worth of back-up generator power.

iONLINE currently offers the following:

Okay, what do I do now?

Step 1:
Decide what type of hosting you require – web hosting or server hosting.

Step 2:
Decide on a domain name, which typically looks like this: yourname@yourcompanyname.co.za OR .com

Step 3:
Decide what type of hosting package you require. iONLINE has three options available: Windows hosting, Unix hosting, and Mail hosting. Windows hosting is used to host a website designed with Windows components. It includes mail hosting. Unix hosting is used to host a website designed with standard components. It is the most commonly used form of hosting and includes mail hosting. Mail hosting is used when a website is not required but corporate email is. It allows for mailonly@yourcompanyname.co.za.
